Vocabulary used by chairs

The following information is helpful for those students who intend to be chair at the Monza MUN conference. Indeed, you can find expressions and sentences commonly used by chairs during debates:


VOCABULARY USED BY CHAIRS AT AN MUN CONFERENCE

We will start with a role call. When you hear your delegation, say present and raise your placard.


We will now proceed with opening speeches. Are there any delegations wishing to take the floor to deliver their opening speech? / We will call delegates to the podium. (At the end of the podium, ask delegate whether they yield the floor back to the chair).


We will now debate the resolution submitted by “…” on the question of “…”. You have 5 minutes to read the resolution, then we will ask the main submitter of the resolution to approach the podium. (After 5 minutes). Reading time is over, “…” please approach the podium to read the resolution and deliver your speech.


(If delegate takes too long to make speech / answer question) Could the delegate come to their closing remarks?


Is the delegate open to any points of information? The delegate has opened himself/ herself to any points of information. Are there any such points in the house please raise your placards high now. “…” followed by “…” followed by “…” in this order.


(Possible phrase that could be needed during points of information): there will be no direct dialogue between delegates; could the delegate rephrase their question in a more precise manner; could the delegate rephrase their question and speak up; (motion to follow-up) granted / denied.


Thank you, delegate, do you yield the floor back to the chair?

We are now in open debate on the resolution as a whole. Are there any delegations wishing to take the floor to make a speech or submit an amendment? Raise your placards high now. “Delegate of …” you have been recognized.


We are in time for / against the resolution / amendment. Is there any delegation wishing to deliver a speech in favor / against the resolution? Please raise your placards high now. “…” you have been recognized.


We will now move into voting procedures on the amendment. Abstentions are not in order. All those wishing to vote in favor of the amendment raise your placards now. All those wishing to vote against. With “…” in favor and “…” against / with a clear majority / with an overwhelming majority / this amendment does / does not pass. Clapping is not in order.

We will now move into voting procedures on the resolution as a whole. Abstentions are in order. Staff please take your voting positions. Note passing is suspended. All those wishing to vote in favor raise your placards high now. All those wishing to vote against. All those abstaining. With “…” and “…” this resolution does not pass. Clapping is not in order / With “…” and “…” this resolution passes. Clapping is in order.


The next resolution to be debated was submitted by “…” on the question of “…”.



House, please come to order.


Motion to move into voting procedures à Are there any objections. Since there are none we will be now moving into voting procedures / Since there has been an objection, we will continue moving into debate / This will be overruled by the chair.

Point of personal privilege / order / information to the chair à Please rise and state your point.


Delegate, refrain from using personal pronouns such as I or me.
