Diplomatic conduct

What is diplomatic conduct? How should you behave at an MUN conference? Learn about courtesy, dress code, and many other aspects in this post!

Courtesy

It is crucial to show courtesy to your fellow Delegates and Chairs throughout the duration of the Conference. During the debating sessions, you will realize that the country you are representing may have different perspectives and political views on the topics that will be discussed; however, you need to respect these differences, and verbal abuse or foul language will not be tolerated.

Official language

The official language is English and, as such, it is strongly recommended that you do not use another language for the best understanding and respect of every delegate around you.

Please refer to the official diplomatic language to be used during the debates (“Honorable Chairs”, “Distinguished Delegates”, “We yield the floor back to the chair”, “Floor is yielded”, etc).

As you are representing your country’s view, never speak in the first person, but rather in your country’s name, also using “we”. Before holding a speech, wait until the chairs have recognized you and granted you the floor. If asking a Point of Information (a question), raise your placard and wait for the chairs to call on you.

Dress code

During the Conference, the Dress Code is formal - western business attire, consisting of:

- Boys: a suit (trousers and a matching jacket) a button-down dress shirt, a tie, and appropriate shoes

- Girls: slacks and suit-pants are acceptable. Skirts must be worn stockings. Dresses /skirts should fall to a decent length.

- No jeans or shorts, no t-shirts, no trainers/sneakers

Note passing

During the debates, you can only communicate with other delegates by passing handwritten notes during formal sessions (this is not allowed during voting procedure).

Electronic devices

Electronic devices are allowed for the lobbying sessions, and Delegates will be able to use their devices (laptop) to do further research if needed during the debates, but phones are not allowed.
